A comprehensive introduction to the types, male and female connectors, and polarity classification of MPO/MTP fiber optic jumpers

Facing the increasing demand for high-speed and large-capacity optical communication systems, MTP/MPO fiber optic connectors and fiber optic jumpers are ideal solutions to meet the high-density wiring requirements of data centers, due to their advantages such as large number of cores, small size, and high transmission rate .

MPO fiber optic jumper is a combination of MPO connectors and fiber optic cables. MPO connector types are distinguished by several factors according to IEC 61754-7: core number (fiber array number Array Number), male-female head (Male-Female), polarity (Key), polishing type (PC or APC).

What cores does the MPO have?

At present, the factory termination assembly of MPO connector can accommodate 6 to 144 fibers, among which 12 and 24 core MPO connectors are more common. According to IEC-61754-7 and EIA/TIA-604-5 (FOCIS 5) specifications, usually 12 core fibers are arranged in a row, which can support one or more rows of fibers in the same MPO connector, according to the discharge in the connector Depending on the number of cores, it is divided into one column (12 cores) and multiple columns (24 cores or above). 40G MPO-MPO fiber optic jumpers generally use 12-core MPO multimode ferrules; 100G MPO-MPO fiber optic jumpers generally use 24-core MPO ferrules. At present, there are 16 single-row fiber array types in the market, which can be divided into multiple rows to form 32 cores or more. The 16/32-core MPO fiber optic connector will become the best solution for low-latency and ultra-high-speed transmission of the next-generation 400G network.

MPO male and female

MPO fiber optic connectors include optical fibers, sheaths, coupling components, ferrules, pins (PIN pins), dust caps, etc., and the pins are divided into male and female. The male connector has two pins, the female connector does not. The connection between MPO connectors is precisely aligned through PIN pins, and the two MPO connectors connected to each other must be one male and one female.

MPO polarity classification:

Type A (straight-through type): The fiber cores at both ends of the jumper are arranged in the same position, that is, 1 at one end corresponds to 1 at the other end, and 12 at one end corresponds to 12 at the other end. The orientation of the keys at both ends is opposite, and key up corresponds to key down.

Type B (staggered type): The position of the fiber cores at both ends of the jumper is opposite, that is, 1 at one end corresponds to 12 at the other end, and 12 at one end corresponds to 1 at the other end. The direction of the keys at both ends is the same, that is, key up corresponds to key up, and key down corresponds to key down.

Type C (staggered in pairs): The type C MPO jumper is a pair of adjacent core positions crossed, that is, core 1 at one end corresponds to 2 at the other end, and core 12 at one end is 11 at the other end. The orientation of the keys at both ends is also opposite, and key up corresponds to key down.

What are MTPs?

MTP is “Multi-fiber Termination Push-on”, which was developed by US Conec. It has improved attenuation and reflection on the standard MPO connector, and a version with higher overall performance. From the outside, there are few noticeable differences between MPO and MTP connectors. In fact, they are fully compatible and compatible with each other.

MPO/MTP fiber optic connectors and fiber optic jumpers provide a simple and easy-to-manage fiber optic cabling solution. They are widely used in FTTH and data centers that require high-density integrated fiber optic lines. It is likely to become a hot demand product for future 5G data center construction. .
