I recently received a question from a private letter saying, “The network now uses fiber optics, but when I was renovating my house, I used network cables. Can I continue to surf the Internet in the future?” Can’t get online.

“The current network uses optical fiber”, this sentence is correct, but it is only fiber to the home. Fibers have lower losses when transmitting signals over long distances. From the optical cat in our house to the operator’s control room, all network signals are transmitted by optical fibers in such a distance of several hundred meters or even several kilometers.

But from the light cat to the router, to the TV and the computer, the network cable is still used – in other words, if you really lay the weak current line in your home into an optical fiber, it is really useless.

The network cable is used for short-distance transmission, the first reason is that the cost is relatively low. The price of one meter of optical fiber is tens of yuan or even several hundred yuan, while the price of one meter of network cable is generally 1 to 5 yuan.

The second is the problem of transmission speed, the transmission speed of the network cable is faster. It is true that the network cable has loss, but this loss is not obvious in a short distance. The longer the distance, the loss rate will increase exponentially.

The third is because the optical fiber has relatively high requirements for laying, and the bending angle is slightly larger, which will cause the signal to fail to transmit. And short-distance wiring often means that many bends are required. Therefore, short-distance transmission is more suitable for using network cables.

Laying optical fiber may not be able to connect to the Internet

It is precisely because the network cable is more suitable for short-distance transmission, the interface of the terminal device is still adapted to the network cable. We can compare the connector of the optical fiber and the connector of the network cable, there is still a big difference between the two ▼

Our routers, our TVs, computers, and the jacks on them are all tailored for network cable crystal heads. If all the optical fibers are laid in the home, the network signal cannot be transmitted in the home because it cannot be plugged into the terminal equipment.

So do we need to lay optical fibers during renovation?

The answer is no need! Fiber optics, not on the list of home improvement materials. The optical fiber for the home is generally provided by the operator. When the optical cat is installed for the first time, the operator will have staff come to the door to connect the optical fiber. What we need to do is to determine the location of the fiber to the home.

There is a weak current well in the corridor and a weak current box in our house. When building a house, an empty pipe (that is, the kind of wire threading pipe used for decoration) will be pre-buried between the weak current well and the weak current box, and there will be a threading wire inside. If you plan to put the light cat in the weak current box, the weak current box is the home location of the optical fiber. Don’t damage the threading tube and the wire inside, just leave it alone.

If you plan to place the light cat in a place other than the weak current box, such as on the TV cabinet in the living room (hereinafter referred to as “point A”), you should lay an empty pipe between point A and the weak current box in advance when decorating. Also bury the threading wire. When installing the network in the future, let the workers make a connector in the weak current box and lead the optical fiber to point A.

If you don’t even want the weak current box, then you need to use an empty pipe to connect point A to the weak current well in the corridor, and reserve a wire for threading in the pipe. In this way, when the worker is debugging, he can directly lead the optical fiber to point A without making a connector.

Fiber is expensive, but when you first set up your network, no matter how much fiber you need to use, your carrier will provide it for free. They will lay out the optical fiber to your desired location and connect the optical cat according to your requirements. (They don’t worry about your greed, because the extra meters of fiber you want are of no use at all.)
