How to choose fiber optic jumper

First of all, understand that the optical fibers in the optical fiber jumper mainly include OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4 multimode and OS2 single mode. The connector types of the optical fiber jumper also include SC, ST, FC, LC, MTRJ and E2000. There is no fixed choice for these in actual application, and you need to choose according to your actual usage. How to choose the correct patch cords for your network? Just follow a few steps below.

  1. Choose the correct connector type (LC/SC/ST/FC/MPO/MTP)

Different connectors are used to plug into different devices. If the ports of the devices at both ends are the same, we can use LC-LC/SC-SC/MPO-MPO jumpers. If you want to connect different port type devices, LC-SC / LC-ST / LC-FC patch cables may be suitable for you.



  1. Select the type of single-mode or multi-mode fiber optic cable

The concept of single-mode and multi-mode is to classify the optical fiber according to the propagation mode-the concept of multi-mode fiber and single-mode fiber propagation mode. In the field of fiber optic data transmission, the term “mode” is used to describe the way light signals propagate within the glass core of an optical fiber—that is, a mode is the path that light travels. So, in single-mode fiber, light travels along one path; whereas in multimode fiber, light travels in multiple paths.


The single-mode fiber jumper uses 9/125um fiber, and the multimode fiber jumper uses 50/125um or 62.5/125um fiber. Single-mode fiber optic patch cords are mainly used for long-distance data transmission. Multimode fiber optic patch cords are mainly used for short-distance transmission. The sheath of the general single-mode fiber optic jumper is yellow, while the sheath of the multimode fiber jumper is mainly orange or aqua blue , and the color can be customized .


3.Comparison of parameters and specifications of OM1, OM2, OM3, and OM4 optical fibers.

  1. OM1 refers to 50um or 62.5um core diameter multimode fiber with a full injection bandwidth of 850/1300nm and above 200/500MHz.km;

(850nm bandwidth is greater than 200MHz*km, 1300nm bandwidth is greater than 500MHz*km)

  1. OM2 refers to the 50um or 62.5um core diameter multimode fiber with a full injection bandwidth of 850/1300nm above 500/500MHz.km;
  2. OM3 is a 50um core diameter multimode fiber optimized by 850nm laser. In 10Gb/s Ethernet using 850nm VCSEL, the fiber transmission distance can reach 300m;
  1. OM4 is an upgraded version of OM3 multimode optical fiber, and the optical fiber transmission distance can reach 550m.
