FTTH adoption rate in Asia-Pacific region increased by more than 10%

According to the FTTH Asia Pacific Council’s latest “FTTH Market Panorama” research report, the adoption rate of fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) network deployment in the Asia-Pacific region has increased by 10.1% in the past year. The research report said last year’s growth rate exceeded the five-year growth rate, among which the number of users accessing infrastructure services through fiber optics quadrupled; the report covers FTTH usage, fiber-to-the-building (FTTB) and other optical access technologies such as data analysis.

The number of FTTH subscribers in some countries has increased significantly. The study data shows that the number of FTTH subscribers in the Philippines has increased by nearly 168.6% year-on-year, while the number of FTTH/FTTB subscribers in Bangladesh has increased by 149.6%. Other countries that have experienced substantial growth in FTTH subscribers include Indonesia (59.5%), Thailand (37%) and New Zealand (30.2%). After achieving double-digit growth in 2018, the overall APAC adoption rate reached 77.6%.

Meanwhile, China remains home to the largest amount of FTTH/FTTB infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific region, accounting for 74% of overall FTTH subscriptions. However, in 2018, the number of FTTH users in several countries in the Asia-Pacific region increased by more than 20%, including Thailand (35%), the Philippines (28%), Sri Lanka (25%) and Kazakhstan (24.9%).

Looking ahead, the FTTH Asia Pacific Council and IDATE expect that by 2023, the number of households passing through the FTTH network will increase by 18% (approximately 649 million households). At the same time, the number of users will also increase, with a growth rate of 35% (about 576 million).

Venkatesan Babu, President, FTTH Asia-Pacific Council, said: “Across the Asia-Pacific region, corporate partnership projects as well as national broadband initiatives are driving FTTH growth. The industry’s transition to 5G will be key to boost fiber deployment and drive investment by public and private players Factors. Many countries around the world are expanding fiber optics, and more and more users are beginning to realize the advantages of fiber optic networks. However, there is still a long way to go before all people and enterprises can enjoy the advantages of fiber optic networks. “
