ADSL broadband, fiber-to-the-home and PPPoE

When doing security monitoring projects, the most common contact is network broadband. Usually, when debugging, broadband is required to be in place, so that all-round debugging can be carried out. We may have heard of many concepts, but we haven’t had time to understand the essential principles. Today, let’s take a look at the three concepts of ADSL broadband, fiber-to-the-home and PPPoE.

  1. ADSL broadband

ADSL is written as: Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line. The simple understanding is that the upload and download rates are not equal. For example, the download speed can reach 12M, and the upload speed can only reach 1M.

After years of development, it has gone through three generations, from the original ADSL to the later improved ADSL2 to today’s ADSL2+, the offline speed can now reach a maximum of 24M.

The specific access method to the user’s home is to take a telephone line from the broadband operator to the indoor modem (commonly known as: cat), which can be connected to the telephone line or the network cable. The network cable can be connected to the router, and then allocated to on each network device.

The function of the ADSL cat is to convert the analog signal in the telephone line and the digital signal in the network cable to each other. ADSL uses a technology called frequency division multiplexing, which can make the telephone data, upload data and download data. There is no conflict between the three. interference, which can greatly improve the utilization efficiency. There are still many ways to use ADSL broadband now.

  1. Fiber to the home

Fiber to the home (FTTP) refers to the use of optical fiber as a transmission carrier to transmit signals in the form of optical pulses. It has the advantages of fast transmission speed, low cost, light weight, and strong anti-interference. One end of the equipment used is called the optical line terminal in the operator’s computer room, and the other end is called the optical network unit in the user’s home. The optical cat is a kind of optical network unit.

A single fiber-to-the-home can provide multiple phone or broadband accounts. ADSL will have an upper limit of transmission speed, while fiber has no upper limit. In the future, there will be higher-speed transmission to support the evolving network technology.

Simply put, ADSL and fiber connections are as follows:

ADSL – telephone line into the home – connect to the ADSL cat port – the ADSL cat connects the network cable to the user’s intranet.

Fiber to the home – fiber to the optical cat – the optical cat port connects the network cable to the user’s intranet.

  1. PPPoE dial-up Internet access

PPPoE is based on the point-to-point communication protocol of Ethernet. Usually, we need to dial up the Internet through PPPOE to access the Internet. Although it seems that we can’t use it when we access the Internet, in fact, we still need to dial PPPOE to connect to the network on the router or optical modem.

We give us a designated account name and password through the operator. If there is no router, we need to use the “broadband connection” in the computer to dial up to access the Internet. If we use a router, we will select the PPPOE method during the first configuration and then fill in the broadband user. name and password, let the router automatically dial up to achieve Internet access.

The operation mode and principle of the PPPOE protocol, interested friends can search the Internet to learn about it, and I will not describe it here. In general, as long as your broadband is using an account number and password, it is all PPPoE dial-up Internet access.
